A quick jog up CO-74 is the charming, well-known town of Evergreen. Established in the 1800s as resort and ranch community, Evergreen is now a popular residential area. Its rich history of homesteading has helped the modern community preserve open space and trail networks for residents and visitors alike, and there are many walking paths and hiking trails throughout the area.
From Colorado Bear Creek Cabins, you can access many Evergreen hiking trails in a matter of minutes and find a wide variety of difficulty levels and scenery. One popular hiking trail for day hikers is Maxwell Falls, which has lower and upper access points. Spend a couple of hours hiking through the Arapaho National Forest with views of three different waterfalls along the loop.
Another popular Evergreen hiking area is Alderfer Three Sisters Park, which offers a few trail options, including the Evergreen Mountain Trail. Another two-hour hike, the Evergreen Mountain Trail quickly gains elevation and puts hikers atop a rock at 8,000 feet for sweeping views of the Evergreen area and Bear Mountain. Visit other parts of Alderfer Three Sisters Park for bike paths, climbing areas, and more trails.
Elk Meadow is a major destination for Evergreen locals. Steady, even paths through a beautiful open pasture connect with paved walking paths and bike trails from the nearby Buchanan Rec Center on one side, and with Bergen Peak Trail and other well-known trails on the other side. Elk Meadow is, true to its namesake, often a great location to spot some of the elk herds who call Evergreen home.
If you don’t see elk in Elk Meadow, you might catch them down by Evergreen Lake, where there also is a manicured loop, connecting to downtown Evergreen and the Evergreen Lakehouse.
Head the other direction from Colorado Bear Creek Cabins and you’ll journey through Kittredge and Indian Hills. These peaceful, open residential areas feature access to Panorama Point, with moderate level hiking trails through Corwina Park, part of Denver Mountain Parks, as well as the Devil’s Elbow and Castle Trail through Mount Falcon Park in Parmalee.
